it definitely has a lot of "character", but it is still a fairly presentable example of a very uncommon Garcia Band poster. it's fairly obvious this example was removed from public display at the time of the shows by an enthusiastic JGB fan. Original 1st printing 16&1/4 x 23" concert poster for the Jerry Garcia Band (featuring Keith & Donna Godchaux, Ron Tutt and John Kahn) appearing from 7/29-30/1977 and Hot Tuna (featuring Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady of Jefferson Airplane) appearing on, both at Theatre 1839 in San Francisco, CA.ĭesigner unknown (very basic schedule/boxing-style design), medium-thick flat vellum stock poster is in good/decent (B/B-) condition there are a couple of fairly pronounced horizontal creases traversing the lower two-thirds of the poster, along with multiple staple/pin holes in all four corners and scattered around the outer margin area, a 1&1/2" crescent-shaped wedge of paper in the upper right margin which has been reattached on the reverse with clear tape, a moisture stain and a large diagonal crease/bend running along the bottom margin, light toning, a few tiny stress creases and handling dings here and there. Jerry Garcia Amphitheater special event rentals On Jthe Recreation and Park Commission named the venue “Jerry Garcia Amphitheater.” Garcia (1942-1995) was the Grateful Dead band’s singer, songwriter, and guitarist who spent his boyhood years living at 87 Harrington Street in the nearby Excelsior District. With the name change, Deadheads gathered for their own informal celebration at the amphitheater on Augfor “Jerry Day” to commemorate his life, art and music. An official celebration for the general public followed on Octoat the theater, which was dedicated with live music, including bands such as Jefferson Starship, and speeches.

In 2000 a sum of $1 million was spent to upgrade the venue with elements such as toilet rooms and facilities for the disabled. It was designed by Architect Alex Yuill-Thornton and constructed by contractor Warner and Levikow, Inc.

On Octothe Greek-style amphitheater opened with a seating capacity of 1200 and room in the surrounding area for others to place blankets and folding chairs. The open-air stage’s sounding board was a series of concrete linear trough forms set vertically, which were placed in an incomplete hexagonal plan. Years later, the area was built-out during a period of the park’s development.

At the time there were still views to the Portola and Visitacion Valley Districts from the hillside before trees were planted. The natural ground formation was mentioned in a 1936 newspaper article, long before it was developed. Part of McLaren Park’s vast acreage had a land formation that could be used as a natural amphitheater. It's named in honor of Jerry Garcia of famed band The Grateful Dead, who grew up in the adjacent Excelsior neighborhood. Using the park's natural surroundings, The Amp offers tremendous views and superb acoustics, making concerts there an unforgettable experience. The Jerry Garcia Amphitheater in McLaren Park is a Greek-style amphitheater that hosts a variety of outdoor concerts and events throughout the year.
